Hemel Hempstead is a thriving town, the most famous landmark being the "Magic" roundabout, which, in fact, is a series of small roundabouts around a big one.

It used to be called the Plough roundabout but the "Magic" roundabout, or the funny roundabout, as it tends to be called was built to cope with the increased congestion that came as Hemel grew.

On the first day of operation in june 1973, traffic came to a standstill and backed up to Berkhamsted. Drivers eventually got used to it although you still see some motorists causing chaos and looking totally lost on the roundabout.

[ Le Rond-point "Magique".

Hemel Hempstead est une ville plaisante dont l'attrait le plus célèbre est le rond-point "Magique". En fait, il s'agit d'une série de petits ronds-points disposés autour d'un grand.

On l'appelait le rond-point de Plough. Le rond-point "magique", ou le "drôle de rond-point" comme on a tendance à l'appeler maintenant, a été construit pour absorber l'accroissement de circulation en provenance d'Hemel.

Le jour de la mise en service, en juin 1973, le trafic était paralysé et l'embouteillage s'étendait jusqu'à Berkhamsted. Finalement, les conducteurs s'y sont habitués, encore que certains d'entre eux provoquent un vrai chaos et paraissent complètement perdus au milieu du rond-point. ]
